I am always amazed by the variety of tea grown in Yúnnán province, the most south-western area of China. It’s extremely mountainous in the north and a tropical jungle in the south. In that large swath of land, they make every kind of tea. Although they are probably most well known for Puer, their red (what we usually call black) tea is some of the best I’ve ever had. What I don’t see as often on the international market is Yúnnán green tea, but it was actually some of the first loose leaf tea I ever tried.
Today I was drinking the big leaves of Dian Lu Eshan Mao Feng from Dobra Tea. “Dian” is an old name for Yúnnán, Lǜ means “green”, and “Eshan” is probably a mangled form of Shān or mountain. It is a bold Chinese green with a unique nuttiness like walnuts and a pleasant drying quality on the tongue.
